Ok here is my opinion on nail clipping. First a short lesson on nails. Inside each nail is a vein, as the nail grows so does the vein. So if the nails are extremely long you will not be able to clip them very short. The good news is, once you clip the nail, the vein wills recede and next time you can clip the nail shorter. Now you did the correct thing by clipping off only the tips. Better safe than sorry. You can use you nail clippers and "shave" off bits of nail till you see a "shiny" spot start to show in the nail. That shiny shot is the beginning of the vein. That is as short as you can clip the nail without bleeding. If you should clip to short and the nail starts to bleed,(you may think the dog is going to bleed to death, but believe me it won't) apply kwik stop if you have some, if not flour will work also. Remember that blood needs something to clot against, so after applying a bit of kwik stop or flour hold you finger on the end of the nail for a bit. That should stop the bleeding. Good luck
