Cherry Eye

I Just joined. We have two five month old Newf male puppies. The Landseer, Harry, has been diagnosed with Cherry eye by our local vet. I went on line and received alll info regarding the disease. It appears that the way to go is surgery-- is this true. We would like an opthalmalogist to do the surgery. We live in a rural area in Pennsylvania, Mifflinburg, our breeder is in Connecticut, so we would like suggestions on Opthalmalogists that have done this surgery on Newfs in the Harrisburg, State College, central PA area

Hi Pat and welcome to NewfNet
My year old newf just had surgery for cherry eye last week. There are two procedures they can do, the first is to cut the gland out and the second is to suture it back inside. The second is the preferred option. My vets husband is an opthamoligist and she informed me that in alot of dogs the suturing didnt last and they had to have the surgery 2 or more times. So I opted to have it cut out by our regular vet. Its only been a week but his eye has not bothered him so far. But he could get dry eye and we may have to give him eye drops. I just didnt want to have it sutured and have it not last and have to take him in again. The suturing also cost twice as much.
Good luck and keep us posted

my grey years ago had cherry eye, i opted no surgery, it didnt bother her and she did fine with it for many years.
it depends how serious it is wether to do surgery or not, the deciding factor for me was her eye was never irritated nor did it look sore at all.
welcome to newf net ;)
