February 3, 2005 to August 1, 2018. Just 2 days shy of 13 1/2.

She was fine yesterday morning when we fed at 4:15 a.m. At 6:30 she ate a bite of toast. At 7 a.m. she refused a cookie. She seemed to be weak. Took her to the vet a 9:30. Blood work showed a slight infection. All the numbers were almost the same as the blood work I had done 2 years ago as a baseline. Last night she would not eat her kibble even with tuna on top. I scrambled her 2 eggs and she ate those. I gave her the meds to vet gave her. This morning would not eat. Started labored breathing off and on around noon. By 6 p.m. she couldn't get comfortable and her breathing was worse. She couldn't stand or walk. I didn't want her to suffer.

So tell me has anyone had a dog that went from acting perfectly healthy to being euthanized within 35 hours? I know these newfs can go fast but this is making my head spin. My vet said she wouldn't have lasted the night.

Godspeed my sweet girl.

Oh, my heart sunk when I saw this. I'm so, so, sorry. I don't have any suggestions, only healing thoughts to send your way.

I am so sorry, remember when you got her after hoping to get one of Evans littermates. Seems like yesterday. I have no idea how she went downhill so fast but in a way she must have thought this was time. Can't imagine how it must be without her, hugs my friend.

Oh Jeannie. I just don't want to believe it. We watched her grow up and become such a beautiful soul. To lose her just seems unfair.

You asked if anyone else has ever had a dog go down so quickly and yes, I have. But while its hard to take, in many ways I'm relieved that any suffering was brief and that I made the best decision in an immensely stressful situation. I think we tend to tear ourselves apart with doubt, especially when they seemed fine just hours before.

You were everything to Chase and she was devoted to you. Just know that letting her go was the best way that you could return that devotion.

The memories of Chase will always be cherished by us old-timers here on NN. And I hope that someday we can all relive and enjoy some of the moments that made her life so special.

You have my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss.

My Tootsie (chocolate lab) was fine the morning of the 3rd. We celebrated Tucker's birthday and that evening she was gone. She was 14 yrs old.

Unfortunately yes to going downhill and loosing them.

But it's better sometimes thsn a long illness though it's such a shock as you wonder if you missed a sign or symptom.

First off, I am very sorry about Chase.

Second, my third Newf, Calza went from fine to being put down in less than 35 hours. Suspected Hemangiosarcoma. She was a little sluggish the night before and could barely move the next morning. Was scheduled to go to the CNC Fall Fun Day so loaded the car and helped her in. Took her to the vet who confirmed an enlarged spleen and a large pool of fluid (presumably blood) in her abdominal cavity. Decided to put her down. She didn't make it past the first shot.

Again, I am SO sorry!

I'm so sorry. What a wonderful life she had with you - 13 1/2 years!!

Fly free sweet girl. I'm sure there was quite a welcoming party at the bridge.
