Charlie Stinks

This isn’t the usual he needs wash, has rolled in something stinky, has had an accident etc. He was groomed about 5 or 6 weeks ago as he seemed very smelly even though it had only been 3 months since his last grooming. A week or so later he stank again. Just a deep musty unpleasant dog odour. We had his anal sacks cleared by the vet twice since hoping it was this, they were fairly full but still its prevailed. His diet hasn’t changed just his odour. The only other thing we think it could be is the water from his hydrotherapy has chemicals in it and we think this may be causing it.

Anyone any ideas or solutions? He is groomed by us regularly at home, his coat is in good condition and his rear end is free of items it should be free of. His skin has been flaky of late

Is he getting dried down to the skin like with a high velocity air dryer? I know summer before last Snuffles was sitting in wading pools almost every day for several weeks. His hind quarter smelled like mildewy wet towels. So he got a bath, and hasn't had one since. If he swims at the kinfolks, he gets air dried. That an a good brushing several times a week, seem to keep him from smelling most of the time.

back end, legs/bum area. he doesn't get dried off after it just a quick towelling. it is a musty mildewy pong. if you just walk past him or enter a room he's in you'll get it. poor guy its not his fault he's not dirty or anything but its not nice

I agree with Leonard on this. My late Dex was in hydrotherapy and HAD to be air dried, otherwise he would get yeast infections.

If he is getting wet from the hydrotherapy, and not thoroughly dried with a high velocity dryer, then that is why he smells. If you have a dryer at home, you can towel him off the facility, then dry him at home with the dryer.

read about using apple vinegar diluted in water and spray alright but we have marble tiles where charlie sleeps in the hallway as its the coolest part of the house for him and vinegar damges marble!

He could be milldewed. Echo used to get that way all the time. Moonlight, too, if I didn't get them completely dry every time they were soaked to the skin. And, their collars will milldew, too, so it's not the dog but the collar.

definitely a mildewy smell from him and not really a natural dog stink its too strong. last night i pulled into the drive it was windy and raining and he ran out to the car to greet me (he doesn't live out in the wind and rain he was just out for a bathroom break when i arrived), when i opened the car door despite the bad weather and it was outdoors i could smell him. he has hydro today and we'll have to get him washed thoroughly afterwards and fully dryed. thanks

You can use Listerine Mouth Wash *the old yellow standby type*, mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with water and mist his 'pants' after a hydro session. I used to lug our dryer to Lu's hydro appointments. It was like an MGM Production twice a week.
