Cart Training - Where to start?

I'm interested in training Monty to do some carting or pulling for recreational purposes. Where should I start? Are there any good books on the subject and resources for a harness?

I'll check with Peter Maniate.. He is the go to guy for this stuff... :groovy: Plus he knows Monty and has a soft spot for him... As we all do.. :bear:

I found this book to be very useful (and it has the tags and highlights to prove it!) http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-text&field-keywords=Carting+With+Your+Dog+Positive+Draft+Dog+Training+for+Fun+and+Competition+%28Dogwise+Training+Manual%29
And this is a friend of ours (as well as a draft judge for a couple of breeds) who has great info on her web page. http://www.romanreign.com/drafting.htm
I credit the book, Jennie's videos, and our PVC cart for Thor's draft title earned in February. But most importantly, have fun!

I have titled 5 DD newfs and 1 TDD. The first thing I do when training a dog to draft is lots of ground work before being hitched to the cart. The dog needs to know basic commands like sit, stay come. Plus commands for right and left, slow, pull/go, stop and back. If the dog cannot do these thing without a cart they cannot do them with the cart. You should be able to work your dogs from either side or from behind all while off leash using these commands - then you hitch to the cart. Since you can work your dog off leash using these commands maneuvering the cart will be simple.

Thanks everyone. I knew there would be some ground work training to do but it gives me great place to start and gives us an objective beyond just obedience training.

The BEST videos (IMHO) available are from the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Souteastern Wisconsin. This is a 2 DVD video set. The first video is all about training and the second video is about getting ready for testing. The DVDs can be ordered directly from BMDCSEW or from Wilczek Woodworks.

Find others in clubs near you and train with them. Not just Newf clubs, but also other breed clubs such as Berners, Rotties, etc. And download a copy of the draft test regulations form the NCA website...these will be invaluable!

Have fun and Happy Training!!!
