Camu C

I'm testing natural vitamin C from Camu Camu berries http://www.healthmatterscanada.com/en/P-AHM101/Camu-''c---90-Vcaps.aspx .

There is literature suggesting that natural C is better than synthetic vitamin C including Ester-C for joint health.

Currently I'm testing it on my 13 year old girl and it does seem to be effective. Will add more test subjects including myself but none of my other Newfs are currently showing any signs of joint problems so this testing could take me many years.

I am hoping that someone else has tried this herb and could share their experience.

Have you ever looked into "Tart Cherry?? I took a friend's dog to a vet who belives in both holistic and traditional. I was just in general talking about Snuffles elbows. She said if yo can find Tart Cherry in a pill/capsule form, it may help. I found some and I do not think I have ever had to give Snuffles Deramaxx since for a limp anyway.

Haven't looked into it yet but will now based on your good results with Snuffles.

Living in the Tart Cherry capital of the U.S. (Traverse City) we use tart cherries for everything up here. I can tell you, if you give your Newf dried tart cherries...ease into it. They cause loose stools very easily :) We just put them in treats for the dogs, but I'm anxious to hear if they work for dogs like they do for humans.

Unfortunately this thread has veered from the original intent - to compare the effectiveness of natural vitamin C from the richest source, Camu Camu berries, and the synthetic Ester-C with regard to joint support.

Hopefully someone else has already tried Camu C with their Newfs.

Never tried it Peter.. but I'll be looking forward to hearing your results :)
So far the testing on my old girl, Belle (aka Mary, aka Mary-Belle), have been spectacular. She is 13 years and nine months and had stopped going up and down the flight of stairs to the entrance to my dwelling area. I finally had to carry her up and down the stairs.

Within two weeks she was going up and down the full flight stairs better than she has for a long time. Her appetite has also improved and for Belle that is crucial as she has lost considerable weight.

my old girl Lucky is 12 and 1/2...she was on Deramaxx and Tramadol for arthritis. She was consistently losing weight, refusing to eat and frequently was difficult to wake up. A friend of mine commented that she was taking Ultram occasionally for pain and one pill made her sleep for hours. I decided to see what would happen if I took Lucky off the meds...and she's like a new dog...still walks a little wonky, struggles with the back steps, but wakes in the am eager for breakfast and to go out, had normal waking and sleeping hours, goes up and down front steps with little problem...I think the Tramadol was killing her. I'm going to try the salmon oil and either the camu camu or tart cherries...depending on what I can find. I want to get her started before the cold weather sets in as I think her arthritis will ramp up then...I know mine has. I guess the point of this was...beware of Tramadol!

When you give Tramadol you may have to add a Zantact once daily; Tramadol has a nasty side effect of causing nausea and loss of appetite

With two arthritic dogs, I'm going to see if I can find a source for Camu C locally. They take Ester C now. Anything to help my guys be more comfortable...
