Blown knees, Weezie

Hi all,
Well, we have been nursing bad knees for about 9 months now in Weezie. We first thought it was her hips, and put her on glyco III. We had plenty in the house at the time, as Angus was on it for his hips. We decided to take a very conservative approach to her problem. She's been xrayed, had chiropractic treatments, and acupuncture. The acupuncture helps, but not necessarily her knees.

SO.. today we are off to the orthopedist for a consult. We figure she will need surgery, so she is scheduled for that tomorrow. My holistic vet worked at the same clinic, so he came recommended. In fact, while I was voting on Friday, a friend asked about the kids. I told her about Weezie, and it turns out her lab had FPLO surgery from this vet and she loved him. Also he came recommended by her nephew who is a vet also. So I think she'll be in good hands.

She's not complaining, and still runs around with Mudji all the time. Can't run as fast, but still tries to keep up. That will have to stop. I guess it's a good thing that we have crates. I'm not looking forward to the recovery time, but we do plan to use other therapies, hydrotank, and acupuncture to assist in the healing.

So, fingers crossed that all goes well, and that Mudji understands that his sister cannot run at all for a while...

Best wishes to Weezie - from Mass where it is almost 50 - but at last it is melting - Newfies need spring too - hope it is good therapy.

TPLO is scheduled for tomorrow morning, Tuesday. Then 2 months of confined bed rest, with limited activity for the next 2 months. It should be an interesting ride, and hopefully Mudji will cooperate. Then we are looking to go through it again on the other knee, either in 2 months or at a later date.

That's the news from here......

Here's the morning update..... The vet just called and they cannot do the surgery, at the moment. All is fine, but the angle of her leg is too steep for the amount of time allotted, about 45 degrees. So off to pick her up this afternoon, and then another day scheduled next week.

I'm sure she'll look funny, as her butt's been shaved. But Mudji will have his playmate for another week.

Aw gee Hannah.... that's gotta be frustrating... you get yourself psyched up for this and then things stall. Sigh. Yet, as you say, at least Mudji will have his playmate for another week.

Nope, a later phone call from the vet, they decided that she would be operated on. I just got off the phone. She is fine and all went well. The vet tech said that she had the steepest angle they have ever seen, to the point that it looked like she was growing another joint. At the moment, it's time to remove the ice, get out the crates, and get prepared for tomorrow. I need to call in the morning to see when she can get discharged, but she'll be home. At the moment, she is on a morphine drip to control the pain.

It's interesting, the vet is giving a lecture on TPLO in York Maine on April 10th as part of a series presented by NENC. Guess I had better go now, as I have the test case....

now the good thoughts start, that she has an easy recovery.....

Glad to hear that surgery went well. Holding good thoughts and keeping her in prayers for an uneventful recovery. Please keep us updated on how she's doing.

I'm thinking good thoughts for her. Our Newfie/Lab mix had two TPLOs (she blew out the second knee while recovering from the first surgery)and after a few days of pain did amazingly well. She was outraged about her confinement and couldn't understand what happened to our daily hikes. The first time I let her out in the yard after months of short leash walks she did her happy prance and we never looked back. It gave her the life she loved back and was worth the expense and confinement. I hope you have similar results.
