Blowing Out Undercoat

Since Bailey is our first Newfoundland dog, we are wondering when she will blow out her undercoat. Is it twice a year? Does it happen around this time of year when the daylight increases? Or, does it happen in response to temperature changes? I groom daily and noticed more fur than normal coming out in the comb and brush for the past few days. It was -40 degrees Celsius yesterday in the morning. So, I thought losing fur might not be due to blowing out the undercoat - may be something else. Should I be concerned? I only noticed her dull fur in the brush.

That's dead fur in your brush. She will shed all year long, but more heavily in early spring and fall. A lot depends on your climate where you live as to how much and when she blows coat. Dogs in warmer climes don't grow as much fur as those in colder regions, so less to shed.

If you have a dog dryer, you can take her outside and blow a lot of that dead fur out. Stand upwind, though. LOL. I once covered my entire living room and myself with fur using the blower. By the way, a good dog dryer is indispensable when you own a Newf. Its one of the better investments you can make.

Mother Nature seems so cruel to have Bailey shedding more when the temperatures were so cold. Ironically, we hit -1 degrees Celsius yesterday which makes me now think that Bailey is preparing for warmer temperatures. The dog dryer is something to think about. We are looking at the K9 II or III. Is the K9 III worth paying the extra money?

I am not familiar with those models. Mine is a different brand and much older. I think, though, for your purposes, you probably don't need a lot of bells and whistles. If you intend to show, the more expensive one may be worth it.

You won't be sorry for purchasing a dog dryer though. You can even use them to blow leaves...LOL.

I have the K9-III. I have never used any other dryer but it's seriously awesome. We take our Newf to weekly water therapy and it's a life saver. It also dries them off so quickly after walking them in the rain. I've only had it 3 months and have used it multiple times a week since I received it. Whatever dog dryer you buy - it is SO worth it.

We have the K9- III also. I was the best dog purchase we have made. We got it from a member on this Forum - Lynn @ Soundbay Newfs. The dryer is stronger than the commercial ones at our local doggie bath place. We often finish drying at home. We mounted it on our garage wall for fast and easy use.

Are these dryers (K9 III or II) sold in Canada? Or, only in the U.S.A.? With the Canadian dollar down, I would like to buy it if possible on this side. My searches have not turned up a Canadian retailer yet.

Yes the K-9 III is worth it. The K-9 II is a great dryer too. They are manufactured in the US so many buy here and ship it there.
