Blood in urine

Poor Ella was up all night on Sunday trying to pee but not much was coming out, however, I noticed a lot of blood in her urine. I took her to the vet yesterday and they did a urinalysis and gave us some antibiotics. Now the vet just called and said the results showed bladder inflamation with a lot of white and red blood cells and proteins, but no visible bacteria. The vet still wants us to finish the coarse of antibiotics. I never noticed blood in Ella’s urine except when she had her last heat cycle at 2 years old. She seems uncomfortable and wants to go outside and pee a lot. The breeder recommended cranberry capsules and maybe a diet change. She has been on Royal Canin Ultimino for the past 3.5 months for her allergies, but maybe it’s time to switch to a kibble with a single less common protien, like a limited ingredient food. Any suggestions/comment would greatly be appreciated. Feeling worried :(

Our Sarah is on proplan sensitive stomach lamb and oatmeal for her allergies, they also have a salmon formula.

cranberry is good to keep the bladder clean I have used that with my babies on occasion too. I hope Ella feels better soon and you get the infection all cleared up quickly.

My suggestions, would be to keep her hair shorter in the rear quarters, look into D-Mannose and be vigilant about keeping her clean back there. I'm fighting with chronic UTI's since Myra's bladder infection that had us at the ER vet a few years ago. I'm currently sitting here awaiting the culture results as I type. At least your girl let's you know something is wrong! Myra is a very low pee-er (if that's a word) due to her bad back, so I'm always cleaning and wiping her. Just know to watch for signs, know your dog and you'll be just fine.

Thanks guys for all the great info and advice. The antibiotics seem to be helping because her pee is back to a yellowish color with no blood. They only did the urinalysis, no other testing. I’m going to make a trip to the groomer and ask them to give her a short cut around the potty area and I’m going to give the proplan sensitive stomach a try. Thank god for pet insurance, we are over 500.00 this month alone and febuary just started. I hope Myra’s tests come back good, do you just clean her with baby wipes or use a special kind for dogs?

Assuming this clears up, I'd definitely do a follow up urinalysis in a month to 6 weeks. Even though they didn't find bacteria, if there is some that went unnoticed, it can recolonize quickly.

This is the problem I had with Spirit. He would get "clean" and then it would show up again in a month or so. Sometimes there was little or no bacteria present in his urine, but weeks later it was raging again.

I was thinking the same thing about a follow-up test in a couple of weeks, especially since she seemed to be in a lot of pain Sunday night when it first started. Thanks so much for the advice, I have very little experience with urinary issues.

I just keep a roll of paper towels at the door and she knows the routine. I try and wipe her down with a water/vinegar mix at least once a week. She's also a messy eater so she gets the same routine on her jowls :) Still playing phone tag with vet, so I have no results yet, but I know it's there. We did a culture, which takes a few days and comes with the recommendation of the better antibiotic to use.

Hey Jane, what do you do for a male with chronic UTI's? Can't be from uncleanliness, right?

I don't know Dawn. When I got Spirit as a foster and took him to his first vet visit, they told me he had a RAGING UTI. Got 6 weeks worth of antibiotics and did a follow up within 4 weeks visit which showed he was clean. So my vet had me stop the antibiotics. And I didn't do any more follow ups. Then about 3 years later he started peeing blood. Antibiotics didn't get it the first go around and I did follow ups this time which showed smaller amounts of bacteria, but not gone. So we ended up doing 3 different rounds of 3 different drugs.

I think the bacteria had gone to his kidneys, but it took awhile for it to be clinically evident to me. No symptoms in other words. After that last go 'round, I started taking in samples frequently, at first every month, then if he was good, every six weeks. We had just built up to every 8 weeks when his scrotum swelled up. I didn't do a urine sample then because he was on antibiotics for that problem. After that round, I waited another 8 weeks, thinking he was probably OK. No symptoms. Then the sh*t hit the fan. I was going to sample him when he got sick and had to be put down.

No one, neither the vets nor myself could either explain or come up with a reason for his frequent problems. My best guess is that he never got rid of all the bacteria in his kidneys, and that's possibly why he got so sick this last time. I think his kidneys had just had too much to keep going, although no one could explain why he was so sick all of a sudden. I opted to put him down because he was really, really old, had numerous other problems, was in pain, and I reasoned that more antibiotics were not going to cure him and would possibly make things worse. I just couldn't imagine running him to the vet every whipstitch when getting in the car was so upsetting to him. Didn't seem fair or humane to do to a sick dog. And what if he had some sort of spell in the middle of the night? It took 3 men and myself to carry him to the car the last time.

Well, I got that off my chest, didn't I? I still feel guilty, even though I think I was right.

Anyway, if your dog gets a UTI, I definitely recommend to do several follow ups just to make sure it's really and truly gone. Blood tests if necessary.

Sometimes all we can do is the best we can for our furkids.
It's never easy ,ours certainly have never been the easiest babies .

There are medicated wipes you can get from Amazon though baby wipes may help.

Wow Jane, I'm so sorry to bring that up for you :( but what I will say is that it is kinda what I'm dealing with, with Myra and I most certainly do understand.

We got the results a little while ago, while you got the word raging, I think the word I got was wicked. So off to get the 30 day supply he wants her on but in the back of my mind, I think this is worse than 30 days, so I'm gonna do another culture about a week after the antibiotic ends. I worry cause last time I know it went to the bladder and I'm worried of it reaching the kidney's. And it really sucks when you have no clue that something is festering, I wish she'd give me a sign!

I'm very thankful for the home vet, he's made our lives so much easier. Again, I'm so sorry for your experience with Spirit and glad you felt it time to get it off of your chest. I do understand and agree with your choice, not that that helps any. And I'm sorry for hijacking this thread!!! No worries to the young little one!

Thanks for sharing a little more about sweet Spirit. For what it’s worth, I really think you did the right thing. I’m sure it wasn’t the easiest choice, but it’s the unselfish and difficult choices we make for our dogs that really shows how much we love them.

My fault on the hijacking. Still raw I guess. So sorry. I just wanted to make the point to anyone who reads this that you can't assume it's over after one test...even if the fat lady sings.

Thanks for asking about Ella! She seems to be doing much better. We are finally finished with the coarse of antibiotics, yea! I’m not noticing anymore bloody urine and her bathroom habits are back to normal. I called the vet and insisted on a follow-up test in 4 weeks. They acted surprised that I was so insistent, but I just want to make sure that we are in the clear. It was a rough month for this poor girl, so I went out and got her a king sized memory foam mattress to sleep on. She’s really soaking up all the pampering lol.
