Jeannie,
I don't own a Newf, but I do have knowledge and, unfortunately, experience with bloat. I have owned Great Danes for the last 10 years and lost one to bloat, a second bloated but was saved with surgery. No one knows exactly what causes bloat or exactly how to prevent it. That's why it's important to have your dog checked immediately if you even suspect bloat! And that's where knowing the symptoms becomes important - by saving time and perhaps your dog's life. Bloat acts quickly, but not every case presents the same. You might see all the classic symptoms, but you might only see one or maybe none of the symptoms, just a dog who's not quite himself. I take no chances and think nothing of "bothering" my vet if I suspect something's "up" with my dogs. Just my two cents and a word of caution, altho I do understand Newfies aren't as susceptible to bloat as Great Danes are - must be their easy-going nature!
