Bathing

As often as you need to. My old dogs rarely get a bath unless they need it. My dogs that are swimming get bathed much more regularly to keep them from smelling like lake water and my show dogs got bathed and trimmed at least once a week when they were showing. If you keep them combed out, that helps keep them clean and distributes the natural oils in their skin. A dryer also helps loosen dirt and flaky skin as well as blow out the dead hair.

I used to bath Ella every month until she reached 80lbs. Now I only bath her every two months and brush daily because the baths are too labor intensive. I took her to the groomer for a bath twice and both times she got an ear infection. However, her coat looks just as good now compared to when I bathed monthly. I think the brushing really helps. I also got some great advice on this site to dilute the shampoo and use a scrunchie to distribute it through her coat. This really cuts down on time.
I also think it depends on the Newf. My first two Newfs had relatively dry skin and didn't need baths that often. Dublin has much oilier skin and definitely starts to smell less than delightful if he isn't bathed every 3 or 4 weeks. He also has fewer skin issues, so I don't mind having to bathe him more.
