Bad meat from a Raw Diet?

Our Newf has gone off her food. It started with vomiting. We skipped a meal and then offered her scrambled eggs with little butter and peanut butter snacks. This went on and off over the weekend. She was still drinking and urinating and running around. Then this morning she wouldn't eat at all - not even scrambled eggs or a peanut butter snack. My husband took her to the Vet to rule out obstruction - hoping it was just a viral thing. The Vet ruled out obstruction and didn't think it was viral either. They thought because we feed raw that she must have gotten some bad raw meat. This seems wrong on so many levels. I am glad that they ruled out obstruction but bad meat? I do have to admit that this is the same Vet who advised a egg a day for our Lab who's blood results were kind of wonky. She said his protein was low. How can a raw fed dog have low protein? Maybe we need another Vet?

I wouldn't think she would have got any meat that was "bad". After all they eat road kill. She might have got something that just didn't agree with her. Did they do any lab work? My first thought was pancreatitis. Does she get a lot of fatty meat or other fatty additives?

I have seen of my dogs "finds" and any RAW i feed cannot be even a 1/4 as bad as those. If A dog is fed RAW all the time they have the right gut enzymes to deal with all of that. it is only when we feed a lot of other stuff and grains and heavens know waht else that they get all the sensitivities. It could be anything......Even what the dog has had in a puddle. If it persists I would go to lab works...

Please give her only minute rice (which has no value, but easy on the tummy) and boiled skinless chicken breasts for a few days. That should help.

I'm so sorry, but I disagree about the rice. They have a hard time digesting it. All the (many) raw feeding groups and email lists I subscribe to absolutely caution against using rice and pumpkin at stop-gap measures when a dog is having an upset tummy. Instead, the recommendation is the 3 Bs-Bland, Beige, and Boring. Usually, chicken breast fits all three of those categories well, and there's no need to cook before handing it to your dog. She needs all the nutrients she can get.

We gave her rice and boiled chicken last night and this morning and she seems fine. The Vet gave her a shot for nausea and told us to give her a Pepcid tablet twice a day. I would be in heaven if I could find a Vet that was knowledgeable about raw feeding and Newfoundlands. My husband did say that the Vet totally fell in love with her though so she can't be half bad. If she vomits again she goes back in for lab work.

Thanks for all your replies.

Did she eat any plants outside. Two of mine got violently ill after munching on some pokeweed roots. I didn't even know they had until I found bits in their vomit. They also get diarrhea if they nibble on any lilies or wild onion leaves. I have to keep a close eye on them outdoors.

I haven't seen her grazing in the yard. Not that I would recognize pokeweed. I will keep an eye on her. She does like to chew sticks. Maybe she got a bad one.

We had to take Ziva back to the Vet on Friday because she threw up again and wouldn't eat. We have seen all three Vets in their practice now. This one didn't think it was bad meat and agreed that she appeared healthy so maybe it was worms/giardia. We brought a stool sample this time. They both fecal tests including the float test for giardia. Her temp was normal @ 101+ . They gave her another nausea shot, an antibiotic, panacur, and a probiotic. The results came back negative but they want us to continue the meds. Ugh! The silver lining is that she is down to a good weight of 90 lbs. Since she is a small girl that is a good weight for her. She had gotten up to 105 this spring.
