Bacon Grease?

Helllo,
I was told by a breeder to give my Newfs bacon grease to help them blow their coats. What do you think about that? I would rather not. Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for that. His coat is really long and silky. I brush him regularly and there are no mats. I have never cut it since I've had him because I've read that it is not good. Would it be o.k. to trim it back a bit for summer, plus to clean it up a bit. My female has a completely different coat much shorter and coarser.

Yes, trimming is good and should be done regularly. You do not want to shave, however. Never heard of the bacon grease theory.

Never heard of that. What exactly is the Grease supposed to do? Only thing I can see is the Newf will smell good (Oooooooh bbbbaaaaaccccooonnnn!!!!! - ROTFLOL)!

Seriously I don't see the logic behind that, other than making a big greasy mess, requiring a bath.

I had a roommate years ago who used to pour the grease from her morning bacon over our dog's food. They loved her :) Can't say that it made any difference one way or another. I use fish oil in Obie's food for his coat. Not specifically to help him "blow" it, as others have said, they do that just fine, thank you. But, to improve its condition.

I've mixed whatever is left in the microwave bacon-cooker thing after draining it with water and put it on Maggie's food. Can we find something to give them to NOT make them blow their coat??

lol....the only thing I've found feeding direct fat like that does is grease the poop shoot, and lordy, how it flies...Adding a source of oil will help the skin stay hydrated and healthy, which will help with coat transition, but I don't think I'd be picking bacon grease as my source...it's extremely salty. I would definitely go with a fish oil, preferably a sockeye salmon oil, or the fish itself. Sometimes I give mackerel. Others do virgin coconut oil. Those seem a little easier on the stomach and can be given regularly to help maintain a nice skin and coat condition. Apple cider vinegar with the mother is also a good option...ingested or used as a rinse after a bath, it can really help keep skin PH in the right range to help with a healthy/shiny coat.
