Any recommendations?

Would anyone care to recommend a good book or two for a prospective newfie mum? There are quite a few newfie books on Amazon, but as past and present mum to a few other less common pets (i.e., rats, rabbits), I know how much bad information gets published in pet care books.

What I am looking for, specifically, is 1) Reading material for BEFORE I get my hugmonster, so I can be prepared and 2) A reference manual to keep handy WHILE I have my hugmonster, with first aid info, training guidelines, etc.

Oh, and since we're at it, any good books on care of berners and swissies? They are also on my petfinder search criteria (hint-hint!) :D

Thanks for any suggestions!

In my opinion, the best book for a newfoundland puppy's arrival is Judy Adler's book! You have to order it directly from her website:

There are quite a few other good books, many people also recommend the Monks of New Skete books, although I've never read them personally. I read a few others about dog behavior, but they weren't really geared toward puppy training, more for an older dog. I would go with the Adler book myself. I love it!

I'd also recommend Brian Kilcommons "Good Owners, Great Dogs."
Although it's not Newfie-specific, it does have a lot of good information, and it covers topics for the life-span of the dog.

Also...for a generic dog book...How to Speak Dog - Mastering the Art of Dog-Human Communications by Stanley Coren.

This book really does give a lot of insight about the way dogs read us, other dogs, and situations. It explains their body language, and the signs they clearly give us about their moods, feelings, and impending behaviors.

It helps us to understand them, therefore making it easier for us to coexist happily, and train more effectively.
