Any other Newfs limp?

Hagrid is a very energentic, playful 7 month old. If he sees something he'll bolt and make a run for it. we can't believe how fast he can go from a standstill into a run and he's fast. In the last 3 weeks he's developed a limp on his right paw. It's difficult because he will run fine, jump ok. Roll around with us and play, but just when he walks he will limp. I have checked his paws carefully and his legs and thighs. He will let me massage him and squeeeeeze his paws to see if he is in pain but he shows no pain. When he comes across another dog or person he will go into this mode where he will be focused and walk very straight and I noticed he doesn't limp at that time. But then as soon as he starts to do his normal trot he starts to limp. I hate going to the vets you always come out 800 dollars poorer and they just say don't walk him. Right that works well, let him out the front door and he runs himself, very funny. If I don't take him even for a slow short walk he'll whine all evening! That high pitch long whine with the exasperated grunt. Any one have any suggestions I can try or do to help him I would like to try everything I can before I go to the vet because he doesn't seem to be in any pain, or should I just go to the vet right away.? I'd TRY to keep him quiet for a couple of days. Most likely just pulled something. I had a Labrador like that once and he used to tear around the house, taking corners on 2 legs I swear. Pulled a muscle, but he was ok in a couple of days. Just don't let him rough house for awhile. Good luck.

How old is he now>
Maybe he has paneostitis (like growing pains in kids).

At five months Boaz begain the same thing. Due to the symptoms, the vet suggested paneostitis. We watched him and, at the vets suggestion, gave aspirin, but no more than twice in one day. Sometimes he'd be ok, sometimes not. Sounded like pano.

He is showing signs of getting worse, and I had him checked the other day by a different vet. Xrays have been ordered, and we will do those as soon as he gets over the tummy upset he is dealing with right now. The vet thinks it's likely he has elbow displasia in one or both, but certainly would not conclude that prior to xray. We are praying not.

My suggestion, take him in if this does not clear up within a few days. I feel horrible that I waited. Maybe there wouldn't have been anything I could do, I don't know. But you can't put a value on peace of mind.

I'd take him to the vet if this persists.

Be careful with aspirin though. Certain brands are okay and others are not. It's best to call and ask the vet about that before giving him anything. I'd just call the vet and describe the symptoms and tell them you'd like to wait a day or so to see if it goes away but wanted to know if they recommend anything. (Other than bringing him in.)

Thanks! I'll call the vet to see if I can give him an antiinfllamatory, although he seems to not be in pain. I hope it is just growing pains, but I'll make sure he rests for a couple days, if he is still limping I will take him in on friday before the weekend. He's mad at me, He has His harness with the leash dragging on the ground in his mouth. He keeps pushing me hard with his nose. I'm dying he is sooooo cute! i am trying to explain to him he can't go for a walk, but he is giving those newfie eyes!........oh can't look.....LOL Lily

If he's limping, he's in pain.

I'd be VERY careful with aspirin. And would go to the Vet and have him checked out. It could be anything from a pulled muscle to pano to elbow or shoulder problems.

The sooner you get a handle on it, the sooner you can treat it.

I wouldn't let him run wild, jump, or play rough for at least a couple of days. I wouldn't give him anything for pain. Let him rest...then see how he does. If the limp is still there, take him in.

I think i'll just take him in, sounds like even if they don't show pain they are in pain. Thanks let you know after the vet visit how he is. Lily
