Any ideas?

Poor Turner. I'm sorry he's not up to snuff. One thought I have is that he possibly could have picked up some kind of bug that wiped out all the natural floura in his intestines. Diarrhea is the result. Have you tried giving him plain yogurt that has acidophlius in it? That is a good way to restore the natural balance in the stomach/intestines. Hope he gets well soon!

If he doesn't start to get better soon, I'd get him back to the vet. I know when maggie has had an upset tummy, she would eat rocks if I let her and she has only stayed sick for about 5 hours. I can't imagine days like that. Don't hesitate to call the vet back again if you feel you have too.
prayin for ya,

He's was started on antibiotics Wed night. Maybe if it is Giardi it will clear it up. Yesterday however, his diarrhea seemed even worse! (If that is possible. Would the antibiotics make him worse?) This am about 3:00 am he started whining...so I rushed him out. He used #1, but not #2. So, back in the crate....after about 15 minutes I heard him gagging....I jumped up and he spit up just a little liquid with 2 pieces of straw. Cleaned that up. Back to bed. Then 15 minutes later I heard him stand....I looked over and he was using #2! Poor thing. I just feel so sorry for him. He didn't even have time to whine or scratch to go out.

I went about 18 hours initially without feeding him....then started him on the rice and cottage cheese. Didn't seem to help.

He is taking a orangish fluid that is for his upset stomach. (Don't know the name of it.) He hasn't vomited a meal since Tuesday night so maybe that is helping that.

I have rarely seen him scratch...so I don't think his skin is itchy. I've never seen him chew at his paws or anything like that.

I'm off again on Tuesday. So if he's not better after taking these antibiotics I'll take him back to the vet.

I'm so sleepy.

"I'm so sleepy. "

WOW! I know what ya MEAN!

Seein' as how he threw up straw...I'll say he was eatin' "sumpin'" in the barn...that he shouldn't have been! "That" can really make 'em sick!

When was he around straw, last?

Our front yard is full of straw...as is every other yard in our neighborhood. They replaced the sewer line and it is a mess...to say the least. So, everyday he is around the straw.

I'm wondering more and more about the Giardi though. I have recently been taking him to a local State Park here and there are dozens of deer, ducks, raccoons, etc. I try hard not to let him drink any water there (I take some for him), but he may have lapped once in passing or something. It is hard to say. Course there is lots of poop around there from the various animals too.

I read where the Giardi doesn't always show up in stool samples....so the vet may not have seen anything the other day.

Halli's Mom: Did the antibiotics make the diarrhea worse initially?

Just grasping at straws....no pun intended! Ha!

Was that "crack" caused by lack of sleep? It's pretty early in the morning for you to be "FUNNY"!

If the vet is not looking specifically for giardia they are not going to find it. It is not an organism that jumps out at your.
On a different note. Keep him away from the straw. Straw molds very easily and dogs are VERY suspeptible to toxic mold poisoning which attacks the central nervous system and kills quickly. Tell the workers who are spreading it around to clean it up well and keep your eye on h him

I don't know what type of antibiotics they gave him.....does it take a specific type to fight those?

Dogger is correct! straw is horrible.
if i were you i would specifically state plain and simple and insist if you have to, that they check for these two things, not sure the antibiotic that it takes to clear it up.
one of our pups was in a home with a caged bird, found out he picked up coccidia from it, finally! they battled the diahrea for two weeks before they finally discovered it, and the antibiotic i cannot recall, good luck i hope he feels better soon!!!

No advice here (you may recall I was the one who totally over-reacted and rushed my dog to vet when he threw up three times), but I just wanted to send wishes for poor Turner to feel better soon! And for you to get some sleep!

Keep us posted. Thank Heaven there are some knowledgeable people here! (Me not being one of them, unfortunately)...

Gee, poor guy! I hope he feels better soon! The straw definately does sound suspicious as the culprit. Can you keep him in the back yard so he is away from it? Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and put a stop to all this.

I'm just going to state my opinion. I'd would get him back to the vet and soon. This can not be good for him to be puking and having diahrea for this long. I know I am a nervous mom but it's better to be safe than sorry. What if it isn't the straw and it is something that needs to be treated now?

Once on the anitbiotics for giardia he will get a bit worse before he gets better as the antibiotics is killing the bacteria and the body is getting rid of it.

I would watch out for the straw too. Sounds like it could be a number of things.

Hope you get some sleep soon.

Yes, you do need a specific anitbiotic to fight it. Something much stronger and for a longer time than you would need for an infection.
I cant remember what they put boagie on (she drank from the lake and we have beavers) but she had to take it for 6 weeks. And Jeannie is right. It does get worse before it gets better.
