Another Pet Store Newf

As my wife, children and I were walked by the pet store in the Galleria Mall in Taunton, MA on Saturday, my son walked inside and saw a Newf puppy. He was so big to be in such a small cage, and he looked so sad. When I asked one of the employee's, she said there was a deposit on the puppy so I just left. This morning I went back to check and he was still there. I guess the people who had the deposit on him changed their minds. I asked to see him and we were taken to "the puppy visitation area" (a four or five foot walled area with slick lenolium floor) to get to know each other. I stayed to play with him for about an hour (all the time I could). He was happy for the attention, and I checked him out a little. I think he is in pretty good shape (I don't know how long he has been there). His eyes are clear, no drainage from nose and no diarrehia. I asked a few questions; he is 12 weeks old, was shipped from some place in Missouri and the pet shop only had the parents names. I wanted to rescue him but I'm living in an apartment 3000 miles from home and am not in a position to take him in. I did e-mail a co-worker about him (she has the heart and financal means to care for him, and I could plug her in to great resources), but if she can't help I don't know how long he will be there.

If anyone is in the area or has connections with a Newf rescue in the New England area please help. I plan to go back in the morning to give him some more attention, but then will be working for six days.

I did read the thread posted by swifty in November and agree that it is a double edged sword when rescuing from pet store, but seeing that poor boy in his tiny cage hurts my heart.

Thanks for any help or advise.

The puppy that was trying to be rescued a couple of years ago in New Hampshire was also from Missouri.....

In the short term, my best suggestion is that someone go in to play with the puppy on a regular basis so at least he'll have some human companionship. Do you know the price of the puppy??

What breeder would knowingly ship their pup's off to a pet store.
I feel for this little chap.
Worse thing is he may end up with an owner that knows nothing about him , but thinks he is cute and unusual looking.
I hope his fate is good.
Zo x :(

there is no way to stop this sort of thing then
It is a catch 22 , if you leave the pup ~so the mill do not get a sale ~ they will get a sale any way from some one that feels the pup is cute.
So either way this will allways go on and on.
And not just our breed :(

I doubt very much this one will get shut down. It's in the middle of a large mall, about 30 minutes south of Boston. The pups are all behind glass in little boxed glass cages for everyone to gawk at them when they walk by, but we can hope.

I am very familar with the Galleria Mall in Taunton, MA., when my daughters where in College in Boston we went there often, and we went into that pet store many times.. this is not the FIRST NEWFY they have had for sale, I know of 2 others.. my twins would get very upset when they were in there, and would loudly comment to the other customers in the store, if they ever wonder why 6 puppies in the glass petting cage where always moving around, and ALL the other puppies where SLEEPING, she continued to say loudly, it's because there are given a pill to make them sleep. It has happen in that store over & over again. Needless to say, my daughter was asked to leave the store. They do not keep their cages very clean, but people continue to buy puppies there. I have not been in that store for 2 years, but I am sure it hasn't changed

Pet Stores don't sell dogs anymore in Canada OK, let me clarify that, around my region that I've seen. PetSmart and SuperPet will bring in dogs from the Humane Society to be adopted, but no purebreds. :D

Laurene,

You are absolutely right...those pups are always sleeping. I have often wondered the same thing. It makes me sad to see them in those cages...all of them. I wish I could take them all home.
By the way, I love going to the Vineyard...Edgartown is my favorite. It is the perfect picture of a typical new england village.

Take care,

Michelle

Michelle.. Have you seen the puppies all asleep at the same time too!! :( Very Sad, huh!! Do you vacation on MV Island?? Do you bring your Newf too?? We live in Vineyard Haven. Would love to meet you and your Newf
if you come back here. Murphy's bothers owners come to the Vineyard too, they are bringing him here this July, I can't wait to meet all of them :D

I could not sleep last night, worrying about that puppy in the Galleria. I emailed NCNE Rescue this morning about it, but does anyone have any news on this little guy? Is he still there? Jason, have you been back and seen him?
I hope Rescue gets him quickly.Anne

A total of 43 puppies (38-40 breeds)were for sale in this pet store last Saturday, all purebreeds I think. They have to come from puppy mills. I feel for all of the puppies, but especially the Newf. They have him marked at $1500. Thanks, Michelle, for trying to get up there to play. He is a sweety and loves the attention. My friend from work e-mailed me that she is going to check him out today. I have mixed feeling for whether or not I hope she buys him. So many possible health concerns with an unknown puppy mill breeding. We can only hope I guess.

I'll try to keep you all posted if I learn anything.

I hate the thought of this... it makes me crazy. It is a catch 22. But the bottom line is, that little puppy is in misery, and knowing this, hurts my heart. Bless all of you who are close enough to go and spend time with it. I'll pray for the puppy... and all the other dogs in these stores.

Whenever I'm at a mall, I find myself drawn to the pet stores... I waffle on whether or not to go in and look. I'm torn between not wanting to know, and wanting to know. Is avoiding these stores burying my head in the sand? I don't think so. I won't even buy a greeting card from these places. I find myself almost hating the people who work in them, but then I realize they need jobs too.

What a nightmare.

43 pups is a lot for this store...there are not THAT MANY glass cages...they are all laying in pet bedding, and it gets stuck to their fur...

Laurene, yes, we usually go once a summer. Usually head out on the Schamanchi out of NB...Two years ago, my husband and I went alone and spent the night at the Harbor View...very nice...last year, we just spent the day with our two kids, and used the busing. Went to OakBluffs, Edgartown, and VH...In high school, we used to play VH HighSchool in field hockey.

I am actually awaiting my newf...the end of march. I am here to learn and make friends. I imagine taking a Newf over on the boat must be an interesting experience...fun to watch the people near it. I bet you get a good seat on the boat!

Thanks,

Michelle

I would just like to bring something up real quick.
When buying a pup from a miller in a pet store, the miller has already been paid. So to feel bad that you are supporting milling by buying that pup is mute.
It's then the pet shop who reaps the second half of the benefits.
They probably bought the pup from a broker for 700 dollars, who bought the pup from a miller for 400 to 500 dollars. I know this all sounds harsh, but it is an ugly reality. At this amount, how much care could that pup have received? Not much. It was made to be sold to a broker. This baby was treated much like a wholesale/subwholesaler situation used with clothing, dishes, any other inanimate objects.
I wonder if the pet shop manager is aware of the health issues of larger breeds?
So bottom line, someone is going to buy that pup. Why not someone who understands and loves the breed, and will provide a good home? If no one buys the pup, they'll just put it on discount and make it readily available to anyone to recoup their cost.

Michelle.. Murphy is 17 weeks old. We have been taking him on the ferry Boat to Woods Hole since he was 8 weeks old. My hubby has to go to the mainland every week, so I go along with Murphy. He LOVES being on the boat, we take him outside, he loves seeing the ocean, seagulls flying around and all the people. He has walked up the gang-plank so many times now, he acts like a big shot, as to say, follow me, it's this way
he loves all the attention he gets by the people and other dogs on board.

Pet stores in Canada unfortunately do sell dogs, definately in Vancouver and we discovered one here in Victoria which sells crossbreeds which look like they are purposefully bred.

Check this out www.creatureville.com
I don't have the heart to go check the place out in person.
There were German Shepherds advertised before Christmas. The top Victoria breeder went to check the place out, discovered someone had bred their Shepherd to a sire from the US, she contacted the sire's owner who immediately flew up here, removed the puppies and reamed out the puppies breeder but by then the damage had been done.
