I don't know if this has been posted already, but I found it alarming.

3 big brands may be tied to chicken jerky illness in dogs, FDA records show

waggintrainbrand.com

Waggin' Train Wholesome Chicken Jerky Tenders were among 13 Nestle Purina brand treats listed among 22 complaints being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration. The treats, made in China, have been tied to reports of illnesses and deaths in dogs.
By JoNel Aleccia, NBC News

Stumped by mysterious illnesses in at least 600 dogs in the U.S., federal health officials have turned to consumers for help investigating problems possibly tied to chicken jerky pet treats made in China.

A log of complaints collected from pet owners and veterinarians contains references to at least three popular brands of jerky treats that may be associated with kidney failure and other serious ailments, according to internal Food and Drug Administration documents obtained by msnbc.com.

Of 22 “Priority 1” cases listed by the FDA late last year, 13 cited Waggin’ Train or Canyon Creek Ranch jerky treats or tenders, both produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co., the records show.

Another three listed Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, produced by the Del Monte Corp. The rest listed single brands or no brand.

Im quite concerned about this. I have been given my puppy dogswell chicken jerky. I didnt see the small print - made in china. Its not on the list but im nervous. He has had a whole bag of the stuff over the last few weeks. No more than 4 a day....but they go in his KOng and he loves them. I came on last night because Atlas was acting differently. He has been licking his penis alot (which is new behaviour) but kind of throwing himself down to do it - like hes being bitten. He had 2 accidents (pee) in the house and after the second accident he peed four more times within a half hour time frame. The second pee accident spelled very strong and not like him. I should preface this by saying that since hes been home (hes only 14 weeks) i can count the number of accidents in the house on 2 hands...its just not like him. Also - unless hes playing he doesnt pee more than once every few hours. And the accidents he does have - have never smelled like this. I thought maybe it was some sort of urinary tract infection or something? When I came on to Newf Net to look up what may be going on - i saw this post and the related info and was freaking out. Any advice?

I would get him to a vet quickly. It may be a UTI, but I wouldn't waste any time finding out. It could also be crystals in his urinary tract that he is trying to pass and can't.

Also, take the package of treats with you to show the vet.

That list is great. Stupid me - I was thrilled that there were only 4 ingredients - and I didnt see the tiny print. I am putting a call into the vets office now. Is there anything I should be looking for in his behavior?

The Waggin Train ones are the ones that almost threw Sophie into kidney failure....She suddenly was drinking a lot more water and peeing a lot more frequently.
At first it smelled strong, then it got dilute from all her excessive water consumption.
I thought she was just getting a UTI and didn't connect it to the treats until Hannah started to vomit the next day... :(

Your puppy may just have a UTI, but even if that is the case, he needs to get on some antibiotics.
Let us know what the vet finds.

There was a problem a couple of years ago with the jerky treats from china. I bought a dehydrator and make them myself. It pays for itself and the peace of mind that you know what you are feeding is priceless

Begin strips and pepperoni? Say it ain't so!

Just so you don't think I do this often, they get 1 begin strip at bedtime. And usually I have a bit of pupperoni in my pocket at the dog park.

So much for my dogs' guilty pleasures I guess!

Thor gets a beggin strip once in a blue moon because I know how unhealthy they are, but we all like a good cheeseburger once in a while, so I took the leftover bag from our old roomie when his dog passed away. The beggin strips are the only treats in the house that are not US made and not cookies of some kind. Boo. Poor Thor LOVES them, but guess I need to trash those as well.

Linzi-- Yup, sounds like a uti. Anytime you catch them licking more than normal, peeing more, peeing in the house, and a strong smelling pee it's more than likely a uti.

I don't give the dogs anything made in China. I don't care what the packaging says, because even if there is US supervision in the factories, you don't know what those chickens were raised on.

I'm confused... I have some of the Milos Kitchen beef sausage slices and the bag says made in the USA. Should I throw these away?
