Congrats Niki! Sorry about the loss of 2. How can you know now which one you want to keep?

What if, structurally, he doesn't show promise for the show ring? What if his bite goes off? What if his heart doesn't clear?

Ginny, that's ok then it will be obedience, carting, etc. Not a problem.
Thanks Heather

You know, I take exception to that comment. I do obedience, carting and etc with my dogs and I would NOT want a dog that isn't structurally sound or that doesn't have a healthy heart.

There are too many cases of breeders who think a working dog can be less than a dog for the show ring and that just isn't the case at all. A working dog is an athlete and needs to be just as healthy and sound as a dog slated for the show ring.

Well said Sue.
I want a healthy well structured dog to do obedience, carting etc. They need to be structurally healthy to do a 1 mile freight haul, to jump in CDX, UD etc.

I have to say I agree.... When I first got Bear, I thought...I'm NOT breeding or showing..so if he isn't "perfect" then that's okay. Well, after 3 eye surgeries, a hernia surgery, both knees with TPLO surgery, hip surgeries to come and his front wrists look like they are progressively getting worse.... I hate what Bear has had to go through! It's just awful for the poor guy! Not to mention that I have spent over $15,000 in just the first 2.5 years of his life!

With that said, I have to say that I'm all for "The Bettering of the Breed"! In other words, a breeder MUST do everything possible to make healthy, structurally sound dogs.

That's not to say that I love my Bear any less, but he is NOT a good specimen of the Newfoundland breed.

I completely understand that if your pupppy isn't perfect, you would still want it...but I just hope that the breeders out there are doing "good" for the breed, not just breeding to breed.

Anyways, thank you for sharing your pics! The pups look adorable.

Since not every dog that goes in the conformation ring is going to be used for breeding, I actually think it's more important that those planning to go the working route be the best structural specimens. One is asking for injuries when a dog with structural faults is asked to pull a cart, leap off of a boat, or drag a boat on shore...
