14 years and 4 days...RIP Elwood

Hello all,

Having just posted about his 14th birthday, I am saddened to announce Elwood passed today at home. He was having trouble last night and while he wasn’t in a lot of pain, yet, he was clearly uncomfortable (he couldn’t settle) and his breathing was labored (he was panting a lot last night). A former vet tech friend thought he might have aspiration pneumonia (from his lar-par tie back surgery). She said that no matter what it was it wouldn’t get better, his heart was RACING (100+ BPM instead of 60) and he had a fever. She said she agreed with my decision.

I called my vet for a house call but they were booked. Then they called back - the vet who had seen him the most moved a meeting to help him pass. While he was breathing better when the vet came, I knew it was temporary and I didn’t want to send her away then have an emergency at 0300 and having to go to the ER. That would be awful. She said his lungs sounded funky so it well could have been pneumonia.

I decided I’d rather let him go a day or two early than a minute too late. After we went to lunch and I had a drink then I took his sister Daisy for a loooooong walk. It was ok until I took carrots out of the fridge, Gave Daisy one, then looked for Elwood to give him one.

I am the luckiest person on earth. I had an amazingly goofy Newfy for FOURTEEN years. It’s just gonna take time to set in...

I'm so sorry to hear about Elwood. My heart dropped when I read this. Both of our dogs were amazing. I'm glad you got to spend over 14 years with him. He and Chase are reunited!

This hurts and sounds familiar. I’m so sorry for your loss but you were blessed with 14 years. With death all around me lately, I loved this one cards saying. Love like the ocean, continues beyond the horizon and Life like the sun, shines where we cannot see. Until you both meet again.
