Questions to ask breeders

The breeders we've been in touch with (We're in NJ) haven't been very responsive, and we're not sure if that's because we don't want a puppy until next spring or because we're not likeable enough or seen as fit enough potential puppy parents (although we are very successfully raising a child). Any advice?

A year is not actually very far off, seeing as we won't have him until at least 8 weeks after whelping, and the gestation period is around 60 days as well, from what I understand, making it a 4 month process after successful breeding. We really want to have a strong relationship with our breeder, but are starting to get nervous that it won't work out for us!

You sound like you know what you're getting into, and it's wonderful that you regard a strong relationship with the breeder to be of utmost importance (as it should be!). You definitely are not too early in contacting the breeders. The earlier you contact, the longer you'll have time to get to know each other (and their dogs) before you actually bring one home.

There are several reasons as to why some breeders don't respond (some are just busy), but if you've tried emailing (twice with a week in between, sometimes the emails go into junk by accident) and calling, and they're still not even looking your way, I would step away and look for another breeder, because most likely that's the kind of response (or lack of it) you'll get even if you were to actually own one of theirs. You should be able to communicate well with your breeder from the first instance you contact them, not only after they've decided if you're "good enough" for their puppy.

I just want to 1) bump this and 2) reminisce! The last post here is me despairing about whether I would ever bring a little bundle of fluff home. That hasn't happened yet, but I've found a wonderful breeder (by attending shows, which I would to recommend anyone interested in Newfs) have formed a great relationship with her, and now after almost a year of anticipation, am waiting for news that the dam has gone into heat and then been bred! There are lots of pitfalls that could happen, but there's a light at the end of this tunnel, and I didn't have to sacrifice good breeding to get what I want so much. :)

Just some happy news for anyone who's feeling discouraged during the breeder search. It's hard, but it works out. :) Fear of not finding a breeder soon enough is NOT a good reason to take shortcuts (BYBs, etc).

My family loves our male news. what is the best way to get him exercised? He likes to sleep and do nothing. My kids pet him, love him, throw the ball for him but he does nothing.

This may be the wrong place to post that question. You might get more responses if you did it in "general". :)

The best way would be to take that goofy contraption off of his face Steve. It's making him unhappy. Or let him go to a new home, where he will be loved for what he is - drool and all!!!

LOLed, and dying of the giggles after laughing coffee all over my laptop! PS. We're in the market for a rescue and will happily give that gorgeous creature a happy home where he may drool to his heart's content.

Are you still active in this group? I am an interested searcher looking to bring a Newfoundland into our home and know there is a lot I don’t know.
